Viaplay Partners With Germany’s ARD on ‘Ronja the Robber’s Daughter’

Viaplay Content Distribution has partnered up with German broadcaster ARD Degeto to co-produce “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter,” an epic adventure series.

ARD Degeto will join the series’ existing co-production partners, Filmlance International, Film i Väst and Ahil Films. Along with co-producing, ARD Degeto will also premiere “Ronja” in Germany — in addition to other Viaplay series including the psychological thriller “Veronika,” the drama “Limbo” and dark comedy-drama “Below,” which were acquired as part of the deal.

A modern adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s world-famous story, “Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” is written by Hans Rosenfeldt (“The Bridge”) and directed by Lisa James Larsson (“Britannia,” “Victoria”). Astrid Lindgren’s books have sold over 165 million copies worldwide.

“Ronja the Robber’s Daughter” follows the enchanting adventures of a young girl born into a band of
robbers set in and around a fortress in medieval Scandinavia. As Ronja grows up, she learns that the
surrounding forest can be magical and dangerous, filled with strange creatures.

Comprising two seasons, the series is produced by Bonnie Skoog Feeney and Mathias Arehn at Filmlance International and executive produced by Sara Askelöf, Hanne Palmquist and Johan Palmberg.

Vanda Rapti, Viaplay Group EVP Viaplay Select and content distribution, said the adaptation of “Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter” boasts “groundbreaking visual effects, breathtaking locations and relatable characters.”

“Together with the licensing of three additional Viaplay series, the deal shows how Viaplay Content Distribution offers a diverse mix of must-see, critically acclaimed titles that global audiences will enjoy – from fantasy family action to psychological thrillers, heart-wrenching dramas and dark comedies,” Rapti said.

Christoph Pellander, editor-in-chief at ARD Degeto, paid tribute to Viaplay’s output of scripted originals. “We are excited that we could partner with Viaplay on such diverse and entertaining projects,” Pellander said. “First and foremost, we are proud and happy to be able to present German audiences with the truly spectacular series ‘Ronja the Robber’s Daughter’ that will delight both Astrid Lindgren fans and many new viewers.”
