iPhone users can take stunning shots with depth-of-field (DoF) using the Portrait Mode. Simply put, this Portrait Mode will produce blurry photo effects on the background, similar to Professional Cameras.
Sadly, iPhone Portrait Mode is not Available on Every iPhone Type
Not all iPhones have a Portrait Mode. This mode is currently available on the iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. Every iPhone X model and even have a Portrait Mode for selfie cameras.
If you want to produce beautiful portrait photos from iPhone, you need to know how to use the Portrait Mode. And, here is a way to shoot good photos using the Portrait Mode:
Use Portrait Lighting on iPhone
Portrait Lighting is a powerful feature that allows iPhone photographers to add professional lighting effects to Portrait Mode
photo. After your subject is framed in the Portrait Mode, select the type of lighting you want from the Portrait Lighting button at the bottom of the viewfinder.
Apple offers several lighting options that include Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Light, and Stage Light Mono (black and white). Each lighting has a different effect.
To see how the lighting looks, Apple provides a live preview. If you decide to change Portrait Lighting in the photo it can be done later.
However, photos must be taken in the Portrait Mode. You cannot add Portrait Lighting to a standard photo. To change the Portrait Lighting effect, you only need to open the photo application.
Next, select the photos you want to edit. Tap edit. Then, scroll through the dial and take the lighting effect you want. After that, tap Done to save the changes.
When you edit Portrait Lighting effects, the effect replaces the original. You cannot save copies of photos with new lighting effects.
However, you can always change it back to the original lighting or choose another option completely. There is no limit to the number of edits you can make.
Make a Portrait Mode Shot Better
Photo editing applications such as Snapseed can certainly make beautiful edits to photo. However, editing tools like this usually do not work for photos from iPhone’s Portrait Mode.
This is because the Portrait Mode photo contain several metadata for the photos, mainly the background, foreground, and overall image. So, you have to edit the layers for it to affect the photo and it’s possible to edit the layers separately if the user wants to.
Infltr is an application that can edit Portrait Photos properly. When choosing portrait photos to edit, you will see three icons above, namely Foreground, Background, and All.
First select the layer you want to edit, and then from the bottom bar select the editing feature. This application offers several filters along with basic editing options for brightness, contrast, highlight, and so on.
Shoot the Object from the Proper Distance
When using the Portrait Mode, you need to consider the distance between you and the subject more than usual. Because the Portrait Mode uses a 2x telephoto lens, the photo will be zoomed a little bit than the standard photo. The message ‘Move further’ will appear at the top if you are too close to the object, be sure to shoot the object from the optimal distance!
